About the monograph: World under erosure: Technotheatre and Performativity
Deadline: September 5th, 2015

Without any doubt, on the threshold of the new millennium, theatricality is a liminal phenomenon: complexity, difference, contamination, interactivity and transmediality reveal themselves an irreversible mutation in the field of artistic imagination. If the end of the nineteenth century hailed the Wagnerian Gesamtkunstwerk as a total work of art, a synthesis of different arts which produces a harmonious impression on the audience –the performing arts, which run in a convergent manner, would seek a unique experience for the viewer–, in the twentieth century the avant-garde theater would be responsible for carefully disassembling the symbolist ideal governed by correspondences and symbolic equivalence. New paradigms as the theater of images, for instance, abandon the idea of theater as an ideal synthesis of elements, polyphony of signs with the same intention, and, against that synoptic sense, different systems of signs now face each other. There also appear new theatrics beyond tradition and even beyond the historical avant-garde, which partly acquire their own typical physiognomy from the hybridization of established artistic media and the collaboration between artists of different nature (as in the case of the performance as a transdisciplinary area). On the other hand, the growing establishment within the network society has led to an unprecedented media assimilation in this new hybrid art.

Accordingly, this monographic issue will deepen in the constellation of languages that characterizes the theatrical in contemporary society, considering the relationship between theater and cyberculture and the phenomenal variety of its manifestations: hyperdrama, digital theatre, cyberdance, Desktop theatre, etc.

This monographic issue is open to the conceptual definition of 3.0 theatre’s own features and the contemporary redefinition of the dramatic, the scenic and the performative; the study of current theatrical events and the overall design of the scenic fact, as well as the critical analysis of the reception of these artistic creations.
